Picking a New Pet

We believe owning a pet can be one of the most fulfilling relationships in your life. We also realize that picking out a new pet is not always an easy choice and there are many factors to think about. Breed, activity level, age, your home environment, and breed specific health problems are all key components when deciding on a new pet for your family. Below are some tips and information to help you bring home the most suitable pet for your family.

Looking at the traits and upkeep in certain breeds of dogs and cats can help you narrow down your search for the right pet. Some breeds are more prone to shed or drool while others may require daily grooming or exercise. Some breeds are predisposed to certain health problems that can be costly to repair or manage. Make sure to talk to your veterinarian about the potential problems and related cost.

It is important to think about the amount of time you will have each day to spend with your pet. Some pets have very active minds and bodies that will need daily challenges and exercise. Other pets may be perfectly happy cuddled next to you on the couch or going for a leisurely walk in the park.

Do you live in a house or an apartment? Do you have a small or large yard? Does your yard have a fence? Do you have children? Do you have other pets? There are many questions to ask yourself when deciding on the right pet for your home environment. The size of your home and yard can help determine if a pet with a low or high-energy level would be suitable for you. If you have children or other pets at home, it will be important to choose a pet that doesn’t mind having companions.

Puppies and kittens are very cute and cuddly but keep in mind that they will require patience, house training, and socialization as they grow up. Most adult pets are already house broken and well-mannered. Young pets typically require a lot more time and energy than adult pets. No matter what age you choose, remember that you are making a commitment to this pet for their entire lifetime, in sickness and in health.

When picking a new pet, remember adopting is always a great option. We have several great rescue groups in our area with lots of pets that need loving families.
